Men's Soccer Falls To Temple In Season Finale

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's men's soccer season came to a close Saturday evening as the Hawks fell to Big 5 rival Temple, 6-1, at Finnesey Field. Seniors Chris DiStefano, Pat Mondile and Scott Cunningham were recognized for their contributions to SJU during a senior ceremony at halftime.

Temple controlled the pace for much of the first half, out shooting the Hawks 12-1.

The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute as Tony Donatelli scored on a penalty kick.

Temple increased its lead to 3-0 at the end of the half as Nate Webb and Matt Maher tallied goals.

Despite trailing by three, the Hawks came out confident in the second half, and got on board in the 55th minute. Saint Joseph's freshman Josh Simon collected a rebound and beat Temple's Patrick Hanigan from three yards out to cut the Owls' lead to 3-1 at 54:13.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Temple opened the deficit to five, 6-1, over the final 35 minutes as Maher, Nick Ebersole and Kevin Gallagher each recorded a goal.

For the game, Temple out shot Saint Joseph's 24-8, with the Hawks holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Saint Joseph's senior Chris DiStefano made six saves in his final appearance in net for the Hawks. Hannigan made four saves to earn the win.

DiStefano and classmates Pat Mondile and Chris Cunningham were recognized for their contributions to SJU during a senior ceremony at halftime.

The Hawks, with the loss, finish the season with a 3-14-1 record and 2-8-1 in Atlantic 10 play. Temple, with tonight's victory, improves to 10-7-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the A-10.
