GRESH'S GAME-WINNER GIVES HAWKS A 10-9 WIN OVER AMERICAN

PHILADELPHIA (04/15/03) - Junior Megan Gresh scored with 49 seconds to go to give the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over visiting American, the Patriot League regular season champions. Gresh's goal capped a 12-minute stretch where the Hawks scored seven goals to rally back from an 8-3 deficit. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for SJU. Down by five goals with the clock winding down, Saint Joseph's (3-9) began its charge with two Kelly Butler goals, the second a free-position tally with 11:05 to go. The senior captain ended her day by tying a career high with five goals. Junior Kristen Teklinsky added an unassisted goal at 7:49 to cut the AU lead to 8-6. The Eagles responded with a goal of their own, but SJU wouldn't give up just yet. Butler scored her fourth goal at the 4:15 mark on a free-position, followed by a senior Brett Dymarczyk unassisted tally just 11 seconds later. Butler netted the game-tying goal with 1:44 to go off another free-position to set up for Gresh's heroics. The 5'1" defender gained possession the Hawks' end and raced downfield to find the back of the net for just the second time all season. None of the Hawks final seven goals were assisted - four were on breakaways and three more came on free-positions. Even more impressive is that SJU had been stymied all afternoon by American's freshman keeper Katie Finnegan, who made 13 stops in the first half alone. She ended the match with 20. Sophomore Courtney Huff stopped 11 shots in the cage for SJU. Gina Riitano and Rebecca Copeland each recorded hat tricks to lead American (9-5). Saint Joseph's is off until next Wednesday when it takes on Atlantic 10 leader Temple on Finnesey Field at 5:00 p.m.
