PHILADELPHIA (03/25/03) - The lights on Finnesey Field went dark five minutes prior to face-off of tonight's Saint Joseph's-Lafayette women's lacrosse contest. The darkness was the only thing that could slow down the Hawks (1-4) offense though, as Saint Joseph's scored a season-high 13 goals en route to a 13-7 victory over the visiting Leopards (1-9). Senior Kelly Butler racked up a career high five tallies, four during a decisive 9-0 run over 30 minutes midway through the game.
Lafayette got off to a quick start, scoring five goals in the first 10 minutes of action. Jennifer Stone, who ended with a hat trick, scored two goals and assisted on two more during the run. At the 19:25 mark of the first, the Leopards held a 5-2 advantage and it looked like the Hawks were headed towards their fifth straight defeat.
But beginning with a Butler unassisted goal at the 16:03 left in the first, SJU would score the next nine goals and hold the Leopards scoreless for 27:11. Three Butler scores were sandwiched by freshman Megan Cheverie and junior Amie Schmoltze tallies to end the first half. Schmoltze's goal was a rocket, scored with just six seconds to go in the half, that sent the Crimson and Gray into intermission with a slim 6-5 lead.
Butler would start the second half with another goal just four minutes in. Senior Brett Dymarczyk followed with a goal, as did senior Lauren Foley just 30 seconds later. Foley had assisted on the first two goals of the half.
Lafayette would finally find the back of the net on a Cristin McGuinn score at the 18:52 mark and another Stone tally brought LC to within four goals. But junior Kristen Teklinsky, who scored three goals and assisted on two more, added an insurance goal and Butler finished things off with her fifth and final goal with 8:14 to go.
Sophomore Courtney Huff made seven stops in the cage for SJU, while Tracey Williams stopped 12 shots at the other end. It was the first time in seven tries that St. Joe's defeated their Patriot League nemesis.
Saint Joseph's held a 39-24 advantage in shots and saw seven different players score. SJU hosts Saint Mary's of California on Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m.
