PHILADELPHIA (11/02/03) -- Saint Joseph's sent a contingent of four players to the competitive Penn Classic over the weekend. Sophomore
Chris Spencer was the most successful, reaching the quarterfinals of the Flight B bracket before falling.
Spencer downed Penn's Sean Montgomery, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round before defeating Radford's Dominic Soeur, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. He then dropped a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 decision to Penn's Aubry Wand in the quarters.
Junior
Van Homer Pangilinan was the only SJU entry in Flight A and dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to Penn's Craig Rubin in the first round. Pangilinan also dropped his match in the consolation bracket -- a 6-2, 2-6, (10-5) loss to St. John's Nick Stocker.
Sophomore
Antonio Aniello fell in Flight B action to Radford's Robel Mengisteab, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the first round. In consolation action, he lost to Navy's Brandon Carter, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Another sophomore,
Jeff Olson, fell in Flight B to Radford's Tyler Eddins, 6-1, 6-3. Olson did pick up a victory in consolation actio, downing Temple's Joe Listanski, 6-1, 6-3. Olson then fell to Maryland's John O'Rourke, 6-1, 6-3.
The doubles pairs of Aniello-Pangilinan and senior
Gary Wnek and Olson dropped matches to Navy and Penn, respectively.
The tournament concludes the fall season for SJU.
