SWARTHMORE, PA (02/18/03) - The Hawk men's tennis team braved the nearly two feet of snow that fell to travel to nearby Swarthmore to take on the nation's #25 Division III squad. Inside the warm confines of the Mullan Center, Saint Joseph's took four singles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory.
The top three singles players, sophomore Francisco Velazquez (7-6, 6-3), freshman Jimmy Holland (6-3, 6-4) and freshman Chris Spencer (7-5, 6-7, 6-1) were all winners. Another rookie, A.J. Garabedian was a 6-3, 7-5 victor at #6.
Velazquez's win was his 33rd of his career, moving him into fourth place on the all-time list on Hawk Hill. He needs just 14 wins to pass Frank Barrett '71 for the career lead.
SJU won the doubles point as Velazquez and sophomore Van Homer Pangilinan took home a 8-3 win at #1 and Holland-Garabedian teamed for an 8-5 win at #2.
The Hawks improved to 3-2 on the season, while the Garnet, ranked #25 in D-III by ITAtennis.com, fell to 1-3, all against Division I opponents.
