BOXSCORE2 AMHERST, MA (5/10/03) - Despite clutch hitting and a solid pitching performance by junior Bill McCollum, the Saint Joseph's baseball team (16-31, 9-14) dropped both ends of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader to Massachusetts (24-16, 14-6), 10-2 and 6-5, at Earl Lorden Field. The Crimson and Gray fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game two, but rallied back to take the lead 4-3 with a four run third. Singles by Jason Tarewicz and John Kokol and a walk by MikeWalls loaded the bases. Nick Baldasari then walked to force home a run and Mike DeLorenzo delivered a two-run double to tie the game. A ground ball by Ryan Stadanlick plated Baldasari with the lead run. UMass went back on top, 5-4, with two runs in the fourth. Down to their last out in the seventh, DeLorenzo drew a walk and Stadanlick smacked a triple off the wall in left field to tie the ball game. UMass, however, led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple and SJU loaded the bases with a pair of intentional walks. The Minutemen then lofted a base hit to center field to plate the winning run, as St. Joe's went with a fifth infielder in an effort to cut off the winning run at the plate. McCollum (3-3) went six innings allowing six runs and seven hits, while walking just one batter in his best effort since early in the year. UMass reliever Scott Ratliff (2-2) tossed just one inning and earned the win. UMass scored 10 runs and banged out 12 hits in game one and coasted to a 10-2 victory. Kokol went 3-4 for the Hawks. Al Braun (3-1) tossed 3.0 innings surrendering eight hits and seven runs (four earned) in facing his first setback. Eric Chown (6-3) hurled a complete game to get the win for UM. The Hawks close out the season on Sunday with a single nine inning game at noon against UMass.
