PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/08/02) -- Al Laveson, the head men's and women's tennis coach at Saint Joseph's, won his 400th career match as the Hawks (1-0) upended Towson (1-2) for the first time in program history on Tuesday afternoon on the Finnesey Courts.
For the dean of SJU coaches, it was his 253rd career victory in 39 years at the helm on the men's side. He also has 147 wins in 22 seasons while coaching the Hawk women.
Sophomore standout
Francisco Velazquez was a whitewash winner at first singles, dropping just one games in a straight-set match. Freshmen
Jimmy Holland (6-3, 6-4) and
Chris Spencer (6-2, 6-4) won their first collegiate dual matches at #2 and #3 respectively.
At fourth singles, sophomore
Van Homer Pangilinan was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victor and freshman
Greg Chang dropped just two games in a straight-set win at #5. Freshman
Antonio Aniello closed at #6 with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
In doubles, Pangilinan and freshman A.J.Garabedian were 8-5 victors at first doubles, while Velazquez and Holland took an easy 8-1 win at #2. Aniello and Spencer teamed up for an 8-1 win at #3 doubles.
The win concludes the dual match schedule for the fall, leaving only the ITA Regional Individual Championships on October 25-29 to wrap up the season.
