CINCINNATI, OH (1/16/04) - Saint Joseph's withstood a late run to remain perfect in the Atlantic 10 with a 59-53 victory in Cincinnati on Friday night for head coach
Cindy Griffin's 100th career win. Senior Erin Brady led the way with 14 points, including three in an 8-0 run in the final three minutes that allowed the Hawks to breakaway from the pesky Musketeers. Freshman Ayahna Cornish added 11 points for SJU's fourth consecutive win.
Ahead 45-36 with just under nine minutes to go, it appeared as if the Crimson and Gray would have no problem putting away its A-10 West opponent. But XU (9-7, 1-4 Atlantic 10) went on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes that gave the hosts a 49-47 lead at the four minute mark - its first lead since the final minute of the first half. From that point on, it was the senior leadership of the two SJU (9-4, 4-0) captains, Brady and Stephanie Graff, that pointed the Hawks to the victory.
The pair scored all eight points in the run from the 3:56 mark to 52 seconds remaining. Graff started things off by drawing a foul on a low-post move and connected on both free throws to tie the game at 49. The southpaw followed with an old-fashioned three-point play, set up by Brady (five assists) that sent a charge into Griffin's troops. Brady made another layup off dribble penetration and made 1-of-2 from the line on the next possession to give SJU a 55-49 lead with under a minute to play.
Xavier drew within three on a Miranda Green layup with 16 seconds to go, but the Hawks' Irina Krasnoshiok made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and Cornish made a layup at the buzzer to produce the final score.
Neither team played particularly well in the first half. Xavier committed 16 turnovers in the stanza, but St. Joe's couldn't take advantage, shooting 37% from the floor and turning the ball over 10 times. After XU took a 14-11 lead at the 11-minute mark, neither team scored for almost seven minutes. The two teams shot a combined 0-for-8 and turned the ball over nine times.
Griffin now sports a 100-56 record, including 52-23 on Hawk Hill, in six seasons as a head coach. With four rebounds, Graff moved into ninth-place all-time at SJU in rebounds with a total of 634.
The Hawks remain in Ohio for the final contest of a three-game, Atlantic 10 West road trip with Sunday's game at Dayton. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and Tom McCarthy will handle the play-by-play on www.sjuhawks.com.
