WEST POINT, NY (2/2/04) -- Saint Joseph's had mixed results this weekend at the season opening Army Invitational. The Hawks competed against Stony Brook, Binghampton, Connecticut and the host Knights and despite playing both singles and doubles against three of the teams, only individual results will count since the matches were played during an invitational format.
SJU had the most success against Connecticut, taking four of six singles matches. Junior
Francisco Velazquez led the way with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at first singles, while sophomore
Chris Spencer followed with a three-set win at second singles (6-3, 5-7, 11-7). Sophomores
Jimmy Holland (6-1, 6-1 at number three) and
Antonio Aniello (6-4, 6-4 at number five) were both straigh set victors.
The Hawks had an evenly played match against Binghampton, taking two of three doubles matches and two singles tilts. Holland and sophomore
A.J. Garabedian were 9-7 winners at second doubles, while Aniello teamed with classmate
Jeff Olson for a 8-6 win at third doubles. Holland and Garabedian were the only singles winners for Saint Joseph's.
SJU had a little more trouble with Stony Brook and Army. Velazquez was the only singles winer with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at #1 and he paired with junior
Van Homer Pangilinan for a 8-6 win at #1 doubles. The duo was the only Hawk victor against Army, capturing a 9-8 (6) win at #1 doubles.
Saint Joseph's opens dual match competition next Monday against Saint Peter's.
