WASHINGTON, DC (03/23/03) - Saint Joseph's lost its fourth straight contest to open the 2003 season with a 7-6 loss at George Washington on Sunday afternoon. In the Atlantic 10 opener, the Hawks held a 6-5 lead late in the game, but could not capture their first win of the season. SJU (0-4, 0-1 Atlantic 10) has now lost three games by a total of four goals.
St. Joe's opened the game with a 3-0 lead, thanks to two goals by senior Kelly Butler and one by freshman Kerry O'Connell. After a GW (5-2, 1-1) goal, Butler completed the hat trick to give the Crimson and Gray a 4-1 lead.
But the Colonials would come roaring back to take a 5-4 lead, but goals by junior Amie Schmoltze and senior Kristen Teklinsky gave SJU a 6-5 lead with 13 minutes to go.
However, just like the season opener against Drexel, SJU could not hold on. GW scored the final two tallies, the game-winner with 6:54 to go, to earn its first ever Atlantic 10 Conference victory. This is their second season in the A-10.
SJU looks for its first win on Tuesday when it hosts Lafayette at 7 pm.
