CAMDEN, NJ (4/13/03) - A pair of gold medals by the Hawks freshman boats highlighted strong weekend on Camden, N.J.'s Cooper River for the Saint Joseph's men's rowing team at the Knecht Cup. SJU's Varsity 8 also medalled for the Crimson and Gray.
The freshman 8 covered the course in 6:20.50 edging Marist by :02 seconds to win their race, while also besting North Carolina, Delaware, Army and Lehigh. The Second Freshman 8 (6:30.9), rowing in the Lightweight category, topped North Carolina by nearly :04 seconds for the top slot.
The Varsity 8 (6:06.10) captured a bronze medal, placing ahead of Army, Boston College and Villanova. They finished less than five seconds behind gold medallist finisher Delaware.
In a competitive field, the Varsity Lightweight 8 placed just out of medal contention in fourth place. The Lightweights finished in a time of 6:16.60, placing behind Delaware, B.C. and Fordham.
The Hawk women will next compete at the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.
