DUPREE'S GAME WINNER LIFTS TEMPLE OVER SJU, 58-56

PHILADELPHIA (2/19/04) - Temple's Candice Dupree did it again. Three weeks after her game-winning jumper in the lane downed Saint Joseph's in overtime, Dupree hit a turnaround from the baseline with four seconds remaining to lift the Owls to a 58-56 victory over SJU. The Hawks, which led for the entire second half, saw a 56-49 with 2:41 to play disappear in a heartbreaking loss to their city rivals. Dupree's game-winner were two of her game-high 16 points, while SJU senior Amra Mehmedic continued her strong play of late, scoring a team-high 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting to move within 19 of the 1,000-point mark. Saint Joseph's (15-9, 9-4 A-10, 2-2 Big 5) took the lead on the first field goal of the second half, a three-pointer by senior Erin Brady, and held it for the next 19:12. After a sloppy first half in which the Hawks committed 12 turnovers, including several of the unforced variety, St. Joe's got things together early in the second stanza. Brady's three-ball ignited a 13-4 run, as SJU capitalized on four TU (16-8, 12-1 A-10, 2-2 Big 5) turnovers before the first media timeout. The co-captain netted seven points in the spurt which gave the Crimson and Gray a 33-26 lead with 15 minutes to play. Temple cut the Hawk lead to 45-43 at the 7:29 mark on a Toni Belafonte three-pointer, but Mehmedic hit two clutch three's over the next two minutes to put SJU up by eight, its largest lead of the game at 51-43 with 5:37 to go. Unfortunately, Saint Joseph's would connect on just one more field goal for the rest of the way, a senior Stephanie Graff layup with 2:41 to go. After Graff's bucket, it was all Temple. Following a Kamesha Hairston jumper, Christena Hamilton nailed a clutch three-pointer from the wing that cut a seven-point Hawk lead to a two-point advantage in a little over a minute. Hamilton then followed with a layup that tied the score at 56 with 0:51 remaining. SJU turned the ball over on its next possession, giving Temple the ball with 25 seconds to play. TU head coach Dawn Staley set up a play designed to get Dupree the ball on the block, which is exactly what happened. Dupree backed down Graff, spun back towards the baseline and connected on the eight-footer. Saint Joseph's was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer. Lost in the defeat was the play of Mehmedic. The southpaw has averaged 11.6 points and shot 53% from behind the arc in her last five games and set new season highs in points (15) and minutes (38) tonight. It is her best offensive output since scoring 20 points against Fordham on February 16, 2004. Brady added 14 points, 13 in the second half, while Graff scored eight points. Hamilton chipped in with 12 for the Owls, while Cynthia Jordan added nine points and a game-high five assists. The win clinched an Atlantic 10 East regular season championship for Temple, the first time since 1997-98 that SJU has not captured the East division title. SJU placed fifth in the A-10 in 2000-01, but the conference was not divided into divisions that season. After a sluggish first half in which neither team shot better than 33%, both teams shot over 50% in the second stanza. Temple connected on 53.8% of its shots, while the Hawks made 52%. SJU outrebounded TU 35-30 and committed just five turnovers in the second half. Saint Joseph's hopes to rebound with Sunday's game against St. Bonaventure, beginning at Noon at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast on Atlantic 10 Television and can be seen locally on Comcast SportsNet.
