RUTGERS DEFEATS SJU IN WOMEN'S LAX, 12-5

PHILADELPHIA (3/21/03) - Rutgers (4-1) staked itself to a 5-0 first half lead and then played basically even up the rest of the way to defeat Saint Joseph's (0-3) in women's lacrosse on Finnesey Field. Junior Kristen Teklinsky netted a pair of goals to lead the Hawks. RU received two goals apiece from Claire Grooms and Maggie Bopp and a fifth talley from Alexis Hierling and led at intermission 5-0. SJU got on the board first in the second half on a goal by freshman Meghan Cheverie less than three minutes into the period. RU then added a pair of goals to go on top 7-1. The teams then traded a pair of goals each as freshman Ali Peach and Teklinsky netted tallies for St. Joe's. Three unanwered goals by the Scarlet Knights in a span of 0:45 seconds slammed the door on any hope of a Hawk comeback. The contest took an unexpected turn when play was halted for nearly 20 minutes when a power outage knocked off the field lighting with 6:52 remaining. After the break, Saint Joseph's tallied the final two goals, one by Teklinsky and another by junior Jen Enoch to close out the scoring. Grooms led RU with four goals, while Bopp and Melissa Mosey added a pair of tallies. Netminder Courtney Huff turned aside 11 shots, but suffered the loss in goal. The Hawks open up Atlantic 10 play on Sunday at George Washington.
