MIAMI, FL (11/29/03) -- The inside presence of
Stephanie Graff and
Irina Krasnoshiok combined for 39 points as the Hawks shot 49% from the floor in taking the FIU Thanksgiving Classic consolation game from Appalachian State, 77-65, on Saturday. Graff (20 points, four rebounds) and Krasnoshiok (19 points, eight rebounds) led a balanced attack that saw eight SJU players score.
Things didn't start as Saint Joseph's had planned however. ASU, which fell behind by 27 points in its tournament opener against FIU, jumped ahead 10-4 by the first media timeout. The Hawks crept back into the contest, tying the game at 15 at the 11:47 mark. After falling behind by four, sophomore
Kelly Springman canned consecutive three-pointers to give SJU a 21-19 lead that it would not relinquish.
St. Joe's would continue to stretch the lead, thanks in part to Krasnoshiok's 15 first-half points. Graff was no slouch either, scoring 12 in the first half on 4-5 shooting from the floor. SJU opened a 46-32 advantage at the intermission while shooting a torrid 51% from the field.
ASU brought the difference within single digits just two minutes into the second half, but it was as close as the Mountaineers would get. Inspired second half play by the Hawk bench, including sophomore
Maura McBryan (eight points), put SJU up as many as 21 points.
The Mountaineers would chip away for the rest of the game bringing the final score to 77-65. The Hawks shot 49% for the game and dished 21 assists on the team's 29 field goals. Springman connected for a career high nine points, while senior
Erin Brady dished nine assists in the win.
Iowa defeated host FIU, 93-87, in the championship game. The Hawkeyes placed two players on the all-tournament team, Jennie Lillis and tournament MVP Kristi Faulkner. Graff was SJU's lone representative after averaging 13.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg in two games.
Saint Joseph's has a week off before returning to action at Lehigh on Saturday, December 6.
