MORAN RETURNS TO HAWK HILL AS ASSISTANT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

PHILADELPHIA (10/20/03)- Susan Moran, the all-time leading scorer in Saint Joseph's basketball history, has been named an assistant women's basketball coach at the University. A 2002 graduate of SJU, Moran has spent time playing for the WNBA's New York Liberty and professionally in Spain. The position will be her first foray into the coaching ranks. "Susan is a great addition to our program," head coach Cindy Griffin said. "Her playing experience in the WNBA and internationally, as well as here on Hawk Hill, will help our players understand what it takes to play at the next level. Her positive attitude and knowledge of the game is contagious!" The Tullamore, Ireland native started all 122 games in her career and is the only player in Hawk history to lead SJU in both scoring and rebounding in four consecutive seasons. An honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press and the WBCA in 2002, Moran scored 2,340 points and holds seven other school records, including career marks for free throws made, free throws attempted, and field goals made. She ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (23.3 ppg) as a senior. Moran was named the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Year in 2002 and the Rookie of the Year by both in 1999. She was also a finalist for the Senior Class Award during her final year. The epitome of the term "student-athlete," Moran was a two-time Academic All-American and was twice the Atlantic 10's Student-Athlete of the Year. SJU made two trips to the NCAA and one to the WNIT during her time on Hawk Hill. The Atlantic 10 East regular season champions, Saint Joseph's is coming off a 19-11 season and an appearance in the WNIT. The Hawks are ranked 24th by Street and Smith's in its preseason basketball poll. SJU opens its season with Drexel at home on Saturday, November 22 at 2 p.m.
