SJU ADVANCES TO A-10 SEMIS WITH 73-63 WIN OVER DUQUESNE

PHILADELPHIA (3/6/04) - Saint Joseph's connected on 32-for-44 from the line, setting a new Atlantic 10 Tournament record for free throw attempts, and placed four players in double-figures en route to a 73-63 win over Duquesne in the A-10 Quarterfinals. Senior Irina Krasnoshiok led the way with 16 points, including a trio of clutch three-pointers midway through the second half, while classmate Stephanie Graff added 15 points. The Hawks (19-9) advance to the semifinals for a conference record 15th time and meet the Atlantic 10 West regular season champions George Washington. The Colonials narrowly escaped with a 64-61 win over an upset-minded La Salle squad earlier in the day. Down by as many as 12 points late in the first half, Duquesne (16-13) rallied back to 40-37 at the 10:25 mark of the second half. Krasnoshiok, who was held scoreless in the first half, then connected on three triples in the next three minutes to turn a three-point Hawk lead into a 52-41 lead with 7:21 to play. A freshman Ayahna Cornish three-pointer with 4:43 proved to be the last SJU field goal as the final minutes turned into a foul-shooting contest. The Hawks shot 16-for-24 from the charity stripe over the last 3:24 of play to keep the Dukes at bay. DU's Candace Futrell, the conference's co-player of the year, scored 21 points but worked hard for every one. Cornish was assigned the task of guarding one of the league's most potent offensive threats and forced Futrell into six turnovers and 6-for-21 shooting from the floor. With starting point guard and playmaker Shiri Sharon sidelined for the second half with what appeared to be a broken ring finger, Futrell was forced to shoulder the entire offensive load. Her killer crossover created a handful of open looks, but Cornish and the Hawk defense made sure Futrell had to work for every opening. Needing to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament for an NCAA bid, SJU and its six seniors knew it was time to step up. "We knew that we had to win and were willing to do whatever it would take," senior Erin Brady said. "We watched George Washington play and we're excited for a shot at them tomorrow." Brady scored 14 points while Cornish chipped in with 12 for SJU. Senior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan scored only six points, but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had six steals. The Hawks 32 free throws made set a school record and fell just two short of the Atlantic 10 Tournament record. The 44 charity tosses attempted broke a seven-year record held by Massachusetts in the 1997 A-10 Quarterfinals. Saint Joseph's advances to tomorrow's semifinals against George Washington at 2 p.m. SJU defeated the Colonials 64-62 at the Smith Center earlier this season for GW's only conference defeat in the nation's capital.
