SJU WINS KNECHT CUP ON THE COOPER

PHILADELPHIA, PA (4/13/02) - Saint Joseph's made a big splash on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., with its lightweight eight crew defeating Fordham, Delaware and Buffalo to win the Knecht Cup. The same lightweight eight boat of coxswain Heather Alba, stroke Justin Marconi, Pat McGettigan, Sean McCullagh, Jason Bansch, Brian Pirritano, Lee Bink, and Joe Francks also rowed in the varsity eight event, advancing to the Grand Final. In that race, the third of the day for SJU, the Hawks finished a strong fifth. The Hawks also traveled to Washington. DC to take part in the George Washington Invitational. Rowing on the Potomac River, SJU's best effort came from its first novice eight crew, which placed second to Georgetown. Both the second freshman eight and the varsity eight rowed strong, but were undersized against bigger, stronger crews. The second freshmen eight placed third to Navy and Virginia, while the varsity eight finished fourth to Navy, Temple and Marietta.
