SJU TOPS LAFAYETTE, FALLS TO LEHIGH ON SCHUYKILL

PHILADELPHIA, PA (3/29/02) - The Saint Joseph's Men's Rowing team took to the river on Friday to row against Lafayette and Lehigh. The Hawks had their way against the Leopards, owning the Schuylkill River while the Mountain Hawks turned the table and swept the Hawks. The Hawk varsity eight, which consists of Drew Parassio, Jon Joyce, Mark Rosenthal, Chris Barrett, Paul Benvie, Jim O'Connor, Matt Gantner, Pete Stajk and cox Terrie Venglarik, bested Lafayette by 26 seconds. SJU, under the direction of assistant coach Steve McDonald, filling in for the injured John Bannan (broken foot), pulled out to a full length lead by the 1000-meter mark en route to the win. The Hawk freshman eight also rowed well with one crew topping Lafayette , and the other falling by 11 seconds to the Leopards. Lehigh had the better of SJU in all three races, topping the Hawks varsity eight by two lengths and defeating both freshmen boats in single races. SJU next takes to the Schuylkill River on April 6 against Drexel and La Salle.
