PHILADELPHIA (1/25/04) - It was everything a women's basketball fan could ask for; -two city rivals squaring off in an overtime battle for conference supremacy in front of a crowd emotionally and emphatically into every possession. Unfortunately for the Hawk faithful, Temple (10-7, 6-0 A-10) remained perfect in the Atlantic 10 with a 62-61 victory in a physical, turnover plagued affair that produced a total of 45 turnovers and 37 fouls between the two teams. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for Saint Joseph's (11-5, 6-1), which gave a gutsy effort on its home court.
Senior
Erin Brady gave another inspired performance, despite being hounded up and down the hardwood by the Owl guards. The co-captain scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting, but her free throw shooting woes continued, connecting on just 5-of-12. Classmate
Irina Krasnoshiok, fresh off her 1,000th career point on Friday night, played one of the better all-around games of her tenure on Hawk Hill, scoring 17 points (8-for-10 FG) and collecting a career-best 13 rebounds.
Down by as many as six points with 3:28 to go, St. Joe's staged a furious comeback that allowed them to tie the game and send it into the extra frame. A Brady layup and a pull-up jumper from Krasnoshiok put the Hawks within two with 2:29 remaining. After a jumper by TU freshman Britney Jordan (15 points), Krasnoshiok followed with a nifty reverse layup off a pass from senior
Stephanie Graff (career-high six assists) to allow SJU to draw within two points, 53-51, with under 90 seconds to play.
A frantic final minute began as Brady stripped Brittany Jordan to give the Crimson and Gray possession with 55 seconds left. After a 30-second timeout, Brady drew the foul and still made the layup to tie the score for the first time in five minutes. Her foul shot, however, was off the mark. The next time down the court, Temple head coach Dawn Staley set up a play for her leading scorer, Candace Dupree, who did not disappoint with a turn-around in the lane to put the Owls ahead, 55-53 with 19 ticks on the clock. Senior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohantied the score off a great backdoor pass from Brady with nine seconds remaining. SJU stole the ensuing inbound pass, but was unable to get a shot off.
The Hawks missed a golden opportunity to take an early lead in the extra stanza, missing 3-of-4 free throws in the first 20 seconds. Another Krasnoshiok layup put SJU up by three with four minutes to play, but Britney Jordan, the arguably the most heralded recruit to attend a Big 5 school, hit another clutch basket, this time a three to tie the score at 58.
Brady connected on 1-of-2 from the line and yet another Krasnoshiok layup gave the Hawks a three-point lead with 1:54 to play.
Temple drew within one on the next possession and Dupree made a jumper with 11 seconds to go to give TU a 62-61 lead. St. Joe's had a chance to win the game in its final possession, but the Hawks were unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.
Britney Jordan, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, led Temple with 15 points, while Dupree recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Neither team shot well in the first half, but surprisingly, both teams were over the 50% mark for the final 25 minutes. The Hawks shot just 8-for-18 (44%) from the foul line and committed a season-high 26 turnovers.
SJU will take a break from Atlantic 10 action to host #7/8 Penn State on Thursday. The game can be heard on WPEN 950-AM and on www.sjuhawks.com.
