GEORGE MASON STUNS SJU IN OVERTIME, 68-59, TO WIN HAWK CLASSIC

PHILADELPHIA (12/29/03) - George Mason made three three-point field goals in the final 25 seconds to cap a second-half comeback and lead the Patriots to a 68-59 overtime win over Saint Joseph's in the Hawk Classic championship game. Tournament MVP Jen Derevjanik (26 points) connected on two of the three-balls, including the game tying trey with just three seconds to go. Senior Stephanie Graff had 15 points and 14 rebounds to earn all-tournament team honors with teammate Irina Krasnoshiok. Trailing by nine points midway through the second half, George Mason slowly began to chip away at the Hawk lead. The CAA school outscored SJU 12-6 over the next eight minutes, holding the Hawks to just two field goals. After a three-pointer by Derevjanik at the 1:46 mark brought GMU within three points at 49-46, the Patriots were forced to begin fouling. Senior Amra Mehmedic, who earlier tied the program record for career three point field goals made, sank two free throws to put the Hawks ahead, 51-46, with 38 seconds remaining. Derevjanik continued to nearly single-handedly keep George Mason alive, drilling another three-pointer with 25 seconds to go to draw within two points. St. Joe's remained solid from the line down the stretch as Krasnoshiok swished two from the charity stripe to put SJU ahead, 53-49, with 23 seconds to go. The Patriots' Lauren Hediger then canned another long-range shot that cut the Hawk lead to just one at 53-52 with 13 seconds remaining. Krasnoshiok then sank two more free throws to give SJU what looked like a safe three-point lead with 12 ticks on the clock. But Derevjanik found room on the wing and let sail a three-pointer with three seconds to go that tied the game. Saint Joseph's ran a well-designed play that gave senior Erin Brady (Weatherly, Pa. / Marian Catholic) the ball on a long baseball pass, but her shot was off the mark. George Mason owned the overtime period, outscoring the Hawks, 10-4 in the period. Hediger canned another three and added a field goal and Derevjanik connected on a layup to put GMU ahead quickly. SJU drew within four points with 41 seconds to go, but the Patriots were 5-for-6 down the stretch from the line to seal the 68-59 win. Graff again had a strong game in the post, shooting 6-for-9 on her way to 15 points and 14 rebounds. She averaged 17.5 ppg. and 11.5 rpg. to capture all-tournament honors for the second time this season. Krasnoshiok came off the bench to score 13 points, her second straight game in double-digits. Vernessa Neamo added 13 points to earn all-tourney honors along with Stony Brook's Mykeema Ford and Charlotte's Andrea Davidson. Hediger netted a career-high 11 points for GMU. Charlotte defeated SBU, 88-77, in the consolation game. SJU begins Atlantic 10 action on Sunday, January 4 when it hosts Duquesne at 2 p.m.
