SJU FALLS TO IOWA STATE, 66-58, IN WNIT QUARTERFINALS

AMES, IA (3/25/04) - Throughout the women's basketball team's trip to Iowa State, it was often noted how friendly the people of Ames, Iowa were. Friendly, of course, until 14,902 packed the Hilton Coliseum for Thursday's WNIT quarterfinal between the Cyclones and the Hawks. Saint Joseph's battled furiously, holding a lead as late as 2:29 to go, but the hosts rallied around its boisterous fans to score seven straight points in the closing minutes to advance to the WNIT semifinals with a 66-58 victory. Senior Irina Krasnoshiok, who led the team with 13 points, hit a crucial three-pointer at the 3:47 mark to give SJU its final lead of the game, 56-55. From that point on, the Cyclones scored 11 of the next 13 points, including a Mary Fox back-breaking three-ball from the corner that put ISU ahead 60-56. The Crimson and Gray couldn't recover and finished its season with a 22-11 record. The quarterfinal appearance is the furthest a Hawk women's team had advanced in 11 NCAA and four WNIT trips. The loss ends the careers of a veteran Hawk senior class, a group of six players that compiled a 79-43 record during their tenure at SJU. As has been the trend for most of the season, the seniors paved the way on Thursday. Senior Stephanie Graff recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while classmate Amra Mehmedic added 10 points, including two big three's early in the first half. In the end, the deadly three-point shooting of Iowa State proved to be too much for the visiting Hawks. The Cyclones shot 53% (8-for-15) from behind the arc as opposed to 28% (7-for-25) for SJU. The Hawks were also plagued by poor foul-shooting, going 3-for-8 (37.5%). Saint Joseph's got off to a good start, leading 16-10 with 12:35 to play before halftime. Mehmedic connected on both of her three-pointers to give SJU the early advantage. The Hawks held the six-point lead until the 7:19 mark when Iowa State put together a 13-6 spurt to close out the half. The Cyclones headed to the locker rooms ahead, 27-26. Freshman point guard Lyndsey Medders scored 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting to pace ISU. Fox added 12 off the bench for the Cyclones. The SJU Class of 2004 certainly placed its name in the Hawk annals. Four players (Erin Brady, Graff, Krasnoshiok and Mehmedic) scored over 1,000 points, while Graff and Mehmedic will go down as the all-time leader blocked shots and three-point field goals, respectively.
