PHILADELPHIA (12/28/03) - Seniors
Stephanie Graff and
Irina Krasnoshiok combined for 37 points and 16 rebounds as Saint Joseph's advanced to the finals of the Hawk Classic for the 14th consecutive time with a 69-53 win over Stony Brook. SJU sprinted to a 39-22 halftime advantage and coasted to its fifth win of the season.
Graff, who matched a season high with 20 points, dominated play early on as the Hawks opened a 10-2 lead after three minutes of action. After a senior
Erin Brady jumper began play, Graff made four straight layups to put the Crimson and Gray ahead before the first media timeout. The forward would end the half with 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the floor.
Stony Brook (1-6) drew within six points at 18-12 midway through the first half, but St. Joe's (5-3) went on a 12-0 spurt, thanks to play of Graff and Krasnoshiok. The duo combined for 10 of the points during the run as Krasnoshiok (17 points, 7 rebounds) had her best performance since the FIU Thanksgiving Classic.
The Seawolves played well in the opening minutes of the second half, getting within 43-30 with 16:31 to go. But it was as close as SBU would get for the rest of the contest. Sophomore
Kelly Springman connected for a career high 12 points, including three second half three-pointers that helped SJU open as much as a 26-point lead down the stretch.
Stony Brook's Mykeema Ford came off the bench to score 20 points, while Jessica Smith tied a Hawk Classic record by pulling down 16 rebounds.
The Hawks will face off George Mason, a 70-52 winner over Charlotte, in the finals at 4 p.m. SBU and Charlotte will meet in the consolation game beginning at 2 p.m.
