AMHERST, MA (04/27/03) -- Maura McGarrity scored a goal
with 1:56 left in overtime to lift the Massachusetts over Saint Joseph's 8-6 on Sunday at Richard F. Garber
Field. The win lifts UMass to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic 10. The
Hawks fall to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in A-10 play.
Saint Joseph's senior Kelly Butler got the Hawks on the board first with a goal at
the 25:15 mark, but UMass rebounded to go on a 3-0 run. On the
Minutewomen's Senior Day, senior Leslie Pollock
scored back-to-back goals to give Massachusetts a 2-1 edge at the 21:55
mark. Her classmate, senior Lydia Robinson found the
back of the net off of an assist from senior Lori Kain
to push the lead to 3-1 with 21:17 remaining the first half.
The Hawks fought back to 3-2 when freshman Kerry O'Connell scored at 17:18, but
senior Jada Emery scored UMass' fourth goal of the
period to regain a two-goal, 4-2, lead. SJU answered Emery's score with
goals at the 14:59 and 6:54 marks by senior Brett Dymarczyk and Butler,
respectively, evening the game at 4-4.
UMass was able to take a 5-4 lead into the half when Emery recorded her
second goal of the game with 6:26 left in the first period.
The two teams traded goals in the second half, with SJU making the first
strike just under two minutes into the period. After a long scoring drought,
Robinson gave the advantage back to UMass when she scored an
unassisted goal at the 6:53 mark to put Massachusetts up 6-5. The
Minutewomen were unable to run out the clock in the final minutes of the
game, giving the ball back to Saint Joseph's. The Hawks took advantage
of their last possession when O'Connell recorded the tying goal with just
1:23 left in regulation.
In overtime, which consisted of two, three-minute periods, both teams
went scoreless through the first three minutes of the extra session. The
Minutewomen were able to crack through the Hawks' defense in the
second three-minute session when McGarrity scored the game-winning
goal at the 1:56 mark, putting UMass up 7-6. Emery added her third goal
of the game with just :07 left on the clock, giving Massachusetts the 8-6
win.
Emery led all scorers with three goals while Robinson and Pollock each
added two goals and McGarrity recorded a single score. For the Hawks,
O'Connell and Butler each tallied two goals while Dymarczyk and Megan
Gresh each added one.
In goal, senior Cyndi Doyle tallied eight saves for
UMass and Courtney Huff recorded 11 saves for SJU.
SJU concludes its 2003 campaign on Tuesday at Villanova. Face-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
