PHILADELPHIA (2/1/04) - Senior
Stephanie Graff scored 17 points, including the 1,000th point of her career, and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds as Saint Joseph's won a crucial Atlantic 10 contest at the Fieldhouse, 58-48, over Richmond. Neither team shot particularly well (32% each), but the Hawks were able to pull off a gritty victory thanks in part to a 22-for-25 (88%) performance from the charity stripe. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for SJU.
Both teams traded baskets early on before the Hawks (12-6, 7-1 A-10) opened up a slim five-point lead midway through the half. Richmond (13-7, 5-4) battled back to draw within one, 17-16, with 7:59 remaining. SJU held the visitors without a field goal for the next five minutes, going on a 9-0 run that provided a ten-point cushion. The Spiders crawled back into the contest, however, going on a 7-0 spree of their own to bring the halftime score to 26-23.
Saint Joseph's controlled play for most of the second half, extending the lead to 12 points, 46-34, at the final media timeout of the game. Richmond was held to just six second half field goals, and four of those came in the game's final minute, as UR made a furious charge to get back in the ballgame. The Hawks were solid from the line in the closing minutes, connecting on 14-for-16 from the line over the final 3:09 to keep Richmond at bay.
Graff became the 17th Hawk to reach 1,000 points in her career with a free-throw at the 7:33 mark of the second half. She joins teammate
Irina Krasnoshiok as the second member of the SJU class of 2004 to reach the prestigious plateau. Krasnoshiok came off the bench to score 11, while senior
Erin Brady added 10 points. The Hawks held a decisive margin on the boards, 48 to 34, led by Graff's career-high 16.
With the win, Saint Joseph's moves back into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 East with Temple, a 60-59 loser to Rhode Island earlier today. Kate Flavin paced Richmond with 23 points on 10-for-20 shooting and was the only Spider in double figures.
Saint Joseph's hits the road next weekend, traveling to St. Boanventure on Friday and Fordham on Sunday. Friday begins a tough stretch for SJU, who plays four games in six days beginning with the Bonnies on Friday.
