PHILADELPHIA (04/03/02) - Delaware scored seven unanswered runs to break a 3-3 tie and defeat Saint Joseph's, 10-3, in the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic at Veterans Stadium. With the win the Blue Hens improved to 14-12, while SJU fell to 4-21-1. A two-run home run by junior John Kokol served as the highlight for the Hawks. The Hens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but St. Joe's went on top 2-1 in the top of the second. Junior Justin Godusky walked to lead off the inning and then with one down Kokol drilled one over the wall. UD added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second for a 3-2 lead. The Crimson and Gray, however, knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the third. Junior Kevin Dougher doubled and senior Pace Bradshaw singled him over to third base. Dougher scored on a sacrafice fly to centerfield by sophomore Bill McCollum. The Hawks could muster just one more hit over the final six innings and Delaware knocked out Hawk starter sophomore Erik Holman in the sixth. Holman would take the loss in the game to fall to 1-5. Freshman Ryan Hoagey and sophomore Erik Vardijan would close out the game for SJU. SJU returns home tomorrow to face Villanova at 3:00 PM. SJU hosts Atlantic 10 West leader and nationally ranked Richmond in a three-game set over the weekend.
