PHILADELPHIA (4/19/04)- The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team and Coach
Phil Martelli were honored for their accomplishments by both the City of Philadelphia and the Phillies on Tuesday, April 20.
The team was honored by Mayor John Street in a brief ceremony at City Hall at 11:30 a.m. Mayor Street proclaimed April 20 as "Saint Joseph's University Men's Basketball Team Day" in the city. Street said, "This team not only won a lot of basketball games, won the hearts of people of this city, the hearts of the people of this region and of this country."
The Hawks were also recognized at the Phillies game against the Florida Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. The team was introduced along the third base line and Martelli threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Phillies manager Larry Bowa.
Last week, Governor Ed Rendell hosted the Hawks for a private dinner at the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg. A number of proclamations were issued to Saint Joseph's by legislators in attendance.
