MORAN SHINES IN OPENER OF SUMMER UNIVERSIADE IN SOUTH KOREA

DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA (08/21/03) -- Susan Moran, the leading scorer in Saint Joseph's women's basketball history, recorded a double-double to lead the Irish national team over Canada (0-2), 75-68, in the opener of the Summer Universiade in Daegu, South Korea. In 33 minutes of action, Moran scored 24 points and added 18 boards. The 2002 graduate of SJU shot 9-for-20 from the floor and 6-for-12 from the foul line, along with dishing two assists and adding a steal. Ireland (1-0) will take on Russia tomorrow. The Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports and up to three optional sports. The ten Compulsory Sports are Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Swimming, Diving, Waterpolo, Tennis, Volleyball; optional sports are Taekwondo, Judo and Archery. The record figures are 6,757 participants and 165 countries in Beijing, China, in 2001. Amateur students whose ages between 17 and 28 are allowed to participate in the competitions.
