WOMEN'S LAX AIMS FOR A-10 POSTSEASON BID

PHILADELPHIA (02/28/03) -- With five seniors and its entire offensive attack returning, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team is aiming to return to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2001. Last year's leading scorer, junior Kristen Teklinsky (31 goals) highlights an offense that averaged eight goals a game in 2002 and should improve upon that number this season. Throw in seniors Shannon Hungate and Brett Dymarczyk and you have a trio that is ready to re-write the offensive record books on Hawk Hill. Hungate needs 16 assists to become the all-time leading playmaker at Saint Joseph's and is currently fourth in career points. Dymarczyk ranks seventh in career goals (58) and points (68) and after just two seasons, Teklinsky is already ninth in goals (48) and points (58). Senior captains Kathleen Burke and Kelly Butler anchor the defense and will lead a young group in protecting the cage. Burke has started 37 of 43 games in her three seasons at SJU and is the unquestioned quarterback of a defense that lost former All-A-10 performers Anne Blank and Katie Helder. Butler is an experienced general, serving as captain of the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams. Junior Amie Schmoltze anchors the midfield, along with senior Lauren Foley. Both were key cogs last season and combined for eight goals. A young group of midfielders are eager to make an impact, led by high school All-American Kerry O'Connell. Sophomore Courtney Huff joined the team late last season after a lack of goalkeeping left the Hawks without a true net-minder. Huff, the starting goalie for the field hockey team, stepped in and saved 50% of shots against her and sported a 12.26 goals against average in her first lacrosse action. She appears to be the frontrunner for the starting job this season and will be pushed by freshman walk-on Lura Turner. Fifth-year head coach Denise Szatkowski brought in a deep and talented recruiting class that should be able to contribute right away. Add in a transfer, sophomore Bridget Carney, who earned collegiate experience last season at Lafayette, and you have a mix of experience and new faces ready to make an impact on the Finnesey Field turf. After the season and home opener against Drexel, the Hawks fly south to Florida for a week of training and scrimmages. Following the Atlantic 10 opener against George Washington on March 23, SJU has a five-game homestand against stiff competition that includes California's Saint Mary's and A-10 power Richmond. After a sub-par campaign in 2002 (3-10, 2-5 A-10), Saint Joseph's aims to return to its 2001 form. With a hungry core of seniors and a deep rookie class, the Atlantic 10 Tournament is certainly within reach for this group.
