PHILADELPHIA (11/20/03) - Senior point guard Jameer Nelson and the Saint Joseph's Hawks were recognized as the Player and Team of the Week by ESPN.com, after SJU's season-opening win over #10 Gonzaga one week ago. The Hawks are also ranked 15th in the nation by Sports Illustrated, in its college basketball preview issue which hit the newsstands today. In that poll, Sports Illustrated ranked Gonzaga third in the nation. Of Nelson, ESPN.com said "He was simply sensational with the basketball, allowing the Hawks to create tremendous ball movement." Regarding the team, ESPN.com said, "The Hawks were clearly the best team in New York City during Coaches vs. Cancer". Nelson was two rebounds short of a triple-double with 20 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. With the win, the Hawks moved up in the Associated Press Top 25 and are ranked 13th. Saint Joseph's returns to action on Tuesday, November 25, at Boston University. Game time is 7 p.m. The contest will be televised on CN8 while the Saint Joseph's Sports Network will carry the game on WPEN-Radio (950 AM).
