Camden, NJ(3/31/01) - The St. Joseph's men's rowing team turned in
strong performances at the Knecht Cup held on the Cooper River in
Camden on Saturday.
Coach Craig Bischoff's Freshman Heavy 8 and Freshman Lightweight 8
both won their events easily on Saturday. The men's Heavy 8 led right
from the start and pushed down the course to earn the Hawks first gold
medal of the day over a string field including Villanova and Temple. The
Freshmen Lightweight 8 also took control of their race early and finished
over two lengths of open water ahead of the rest of the field.
The Men's Varsity boats had a very strong showing against a field that
included Temple, Dowling, BC, and Villanova. The V8 finished fourth
behind Temple, Dowling and Villanova. Villanova held off the Hawks over
the last 200 meters to finish in relatively tight pack with Dowling and VU.
The JV 8 fought hard in their race in which they were very undersized.
They rowed very well and are developing quickly into a crew to beat
come Dad Vail.
