HAWKS STUN BONNIES, 91-84

OLEAN, NY (02/28/02) - The wildest fans in the Atlantic 10 were screaming ``Kill the Bird.'' One guy came out of the Reilly Center stands and tried to tackle the Hawk. And their team was leading when all that was going down. Perhaps, that stool next to the Saint Joseph's bench that announced it was ``reserved for Deputy Sheriff'' was a tip. When another A-10 Holy War ended, after an incredible 50 seconds that will be long remembered at St. Joe's, plastic bottles and paper cups came flying out of the stands. On senior night, the St. Bonaventure faithful had seen their team unravel. And they were not happy about it. Another fan came out of the stands and went after Hawks point guard Jameer Nelson. St. Joe's escaped to its locker room. St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli described that locker room as ``the most excited we've had all year.'' No wonder. The Hawks were down five with barely a minute left. The Bonnies had the ball. The Hawks scored 12 points in 50 seconds. The Bonnies never scored again. St. Joe's 91-St. Bonaventure 84. ``I had to dodge a root beer bottle or something,'' Hawks center Damian Reid said. ``They could throw a tank at me, they couldn't have stopped my happiness.'' St. Joe's went back to its hotel across from the St. Bonaventure campus, checked out and got on its bus for the long ride back home. It was a ride they have been waiting all season to take. St. Joe's (18-9, 12-3 Atlantic 10) played too many games as if was scared to lose. These Hawks played this game like winning was the only option. Nelson (23 points), Na'im Crenshaw (19) and Marvin O'Connor (16) combined for 58 points and an incredible 29 rebounds. ``Marvin O'Connor had 14 rebounds?'' Martelli said when he got a look at the stat sheet. He did. It was a career high. Crenshaw's nine boards were also a career high. ``This was a hustle game for us,'' O'Connor said. It was a game that often saw eight guards on the floor at once. It was a game that technically St. Joe's did not have to win. In reality, it was a game they needed to win. Reid took five shots and made them all. Delonte West and Tyrone Barley came off the bench to combine for 14 points and made giant plays at the finish. The Hawks had to play the last 2:23 without Bill Phillips who fouled out. They looked done when Nelson who was picking up his dribble at all the wrong places against the Bonnies pressure in the first half, followed two missed free throws with a missed layup at 1:15. The Bonnies (16-10, 8-7) led 84-79. But West and Nelson trapped Marques Green (17 points) at midcourt. West tipped the ball to Nelson who threw it back to West for a layup with 1:08 left. After a St. Joe's timeout, the Hawks press forced the Bonnies to call a timeout and then forced them into a 5-second violation. Nelson drove down the right side, jumped in the air and seemed completely lost. He somehow got the ball to Crenshaw standing behind the arc on his favorite left side. He drilled it. ``I just knew he was going to lay it up,'' Crenshaw said. ``I just dropped my hands to look. All of a sudden the ball just popped in my hands. I let it go. You know that's my spot.'' Nelson explained himself this way. ``Somebody had to be open,'' Nelson said. ``There were like three men around me. I saw Marvin next to me. I figured Na'im has to be somewhere over there on the left where he always is. '' West trapped Green on the sideline and he stepped out of bounds. Nelson was fouled. He made a backward three-point play, making the first free throw before missing the second. The rebound bounced away from Vidal Massiah right to Nelson. He laid it in. Green rushed a three that was not close. Barley made two free throws. Green missed a layup. O'Connor made two free throws. Those were your 12 points in 50 seconds. When Crensahw tipped the final Bonnies miss away at the buzzer, Martelli screamed ``Yes, sir.'' He was easy to hear. The Reilly Center had gone quiet. The Hawks committed 11 turnovers before the Bonnies committed any. In the final 22 minutes, the Hawks had exactly four TO's. The Bonnies had five TO's in the first 39 minutes and three in the last minute. ``That last six games have been our best body of work,'' Martelli said. Still, the endings kept going the wrong way for St. Joe's. Dayton missed two shots to beat the Hawks at the end Saturday. Now, there's this comeback. It's coming late, but it's coming. ``With about a minute to go, we were down five or something, I kept saying we were going to win this game,'' Crenshaw said. ``(My teammates) were looking at me like I was crazy. You see what happened. Miracle plays. The ball's bouncing our way now.'' In reality, they are making it bounce their way. ``It's about time,'' Phillips said.
