SJU CLAMPS DOWN ON FORDHAM, WINS 63-40 IN THE BRONX

BRONX, NY (2/8/04) - Saint Joseph's had one of its best defensive outings of the season, forcing 25 turnovers and holding Fordham to 29% shooting, and placed four players in double-figures in a 63-40 victory at Rose Hill Gymnasium in the Bronx. The Hawks clamped down especially tight in the second half, limiting the Rams to just six second half field goals and 22% shooting. Reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Stephanie Graff recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior Amra Mehmedic chipped in with a season-high 14 points. SJU (13-7, 8-2 A-10) started off with full-court pressure that had the Rams flustered early. Senior Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan, who ended the day with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting, scored the Hawks' first three field goals in an 11-2 spurt to start the game. The lead was short-lived, however, as Fordham fought back to within one at 16-15 with 11:13 to play in the first half. Mohan and senior Erin Brady were the catalysts in a 13-0 run over the next five minutes. The duo had a hand in 10 of the 13 points as Brady scored six of her 12 points during the spurt giving SJU what appeared to be a comfortable 29-15 lead with 5:34 on the clock. Fordham scored seven of the next nine points, however, before a sophomore Faith Gross jumper as time expired gave SJU a 34-22 halftime advantage. The Hawk defense was tight enough to withstand being held to without a field goal for the first 7:17 of the half, and still have a 38-29 lead at the end of it. Two free throws by Brady snapped a scoreless streak that reached 6:35 and an Ayahna Cornish layup at the 12:43 mark was the first Hawk bucket since Gross's first half buzzer beater. Saint Joseph's limited Fordham to just seven points over the final five minutes and stretched a 13-point lead to as many as 25 with 27 seconds on the clock. Graff swatted three shots and now has 45 on the season, breaking her own single seaso record she set last season. Mehmedic had her second straight strong shooting game, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc for a season-high 14 points. The Hawk bench outscored its Fordham counterparts 21-4 in the game and SJU scored more than half (34) of its points in the paint. Monica Mack led the Rams with 17 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Crimson and Gray continue a four-game in six-day streak with Tuesday's Big 5 clash at Pennsylvania. WPEN-950 AM will broadcast the game with Tom McCarthy and Renie Shields on the call. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
