NELSON NAMED ATLANTIC 10 AND BIG 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR 5TH TIME

PHILADELPHIA (1/11/04) - Saint Joseph's point guard Jameer Nelson has been named the Player of the Week in both the Atlantic 10 and the Big 5 for Jan. 11 and for the fifth time this season. It marks the 10th time in Nelson's career that he has earned the conference's weekly honor, a total that is second only to Xavier's David West (14 times). Nelson helped the 9th-ranked Hawks remain unbeaten averaging 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals in a pair of road wins. He hit 17-of-27 shots from the field (62.9%), 9-for-17 (52.9%) from three-point range, and 10-for-14 from the foul line. In the 71-60 win at Richmond (Jan. 6), Nelson made his first seven shots en route to 18 first-half points a season-high 32 points in the game. Nelson shot 9-for-14 from the field, 5-for-10 from three-point range and 9-for-12 from the foul line, while adding five rebounds and six steals. In the Hawks' 78-61 win over Duquesne (Jan. 10), Nelson scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. The senior hit three consecutive three-point field goals in a span of a minute, while the team made seven in a row, to break open the game. In the contest he converted 8-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Nelson, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the top contenders for National Player of the Year honors, has gone on a tear in the month of January. In the three games of 2004, the 5-11 guard is averaging 27.3 points per game and is converting 64.3 percent (27-42) from the field and 50 (11-22) percent from three-point range. The 13-0 Hawks return home to host Fordham on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
