PHILADELPHIA (04/09/03) -- For the third time this season and the second in overtime, the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team had victory snatched from its grasp. This time, the Hawks saw an 8-0 first half lead vanish as La Salle picked up its first win of the season with an 11-8 overtime win at Temple's Geasy Field. The loss eliminated SJU (2-8, 0-4 A-10) from the Atlantic 10 playoffs.
Senior Brett Dymarczyk scored the first of her three goals at the 25:43 mark of the game and classmate Kelly Butler followed a minute later to give the Hawks an early 2-0 advantage. Just 10 seconds later, Dymarczyk netted another tally to complete the two minute explosion.
Freshman Kerry O'Connell added an unassisted goal before freshman Anastasia Schafer joined in on the scoring off a pass from Dymarczyk. Three more goals from junior Kristen Teklinsky, O'Connell and Dymarczyk gave the Crimson and Gray a 8-0 lead that seemed insurmountable.
But Dymarczyk's goal at the 5:37 mark of the first half would be the last, as La Salle scored once before halftime to cut the SJU lead to 8-1. The game still looked like a Hawk win even with just ten minutes to go. Saint Joseph's held a 8-4 lead at that point, but the Explorers (1-9, 1-2)scored four goals in the next seven minutes to knot the score at eight. Kate Henwood's tally at the three minute mark proved to be enough to send the game into overtime.
The extra period was all La Salle. Two goals at the 2:24 and 2:19 mark gave the Explorers a 10-8 lead and a Jen Blaney tally with two seconds to go was icing on the cake, giving La Salle and knocking the Hawks out of the postseason for the second straight season.
Dymarczyk continued her torrid play, scoring three more goals and adding an assist to lead SJU. She now has seven goals in her last two games. Sophomore keeper Courtney Huff stopped eight shots in the net for the Hawks.
SJU has seen first half leads disappear in three games this season; a 9-8 home opening loss to Drexel, a 7-5 overtime defeat at Lehigh, and this afternoon.
