VCU RALLIES TO DEFEAT HAWKS, 8-2

RICHMOND, VA (02/17/02) - Redshirt freshman Al Braun gave up just one earned run in 5.2 innings, but Virginia Commonwealth (3-4) scored four times in the sixth and three times in the seventh to defeat Saint Joseph's (0-3) at The Diamond, 8-2. The loss completed a season-opening three-game series sweep of the Hawks by the Rams. SJU led the game 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Braun (0-1) opened the inning with a walk. A sacrifice bunt followed, but Hawk third baseman Mike Walls overthrew first base, allowing the runners to go to first and third. After another walk and a strikeout, VCU tied the game on a sacrifice fly to right. The Rams took the lead for good on a double down the left field line. Junior John Kokol then relieved Brauna and quikly uncorked a wild pitch to score another run. The final marker of the inning came on an error by shortstop Pace Bradshaw. The Hawks had taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Brian Anecharico opened the inning and scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 1-1. After a strikeout junior Jim Kelly reached on a bunt single and then moved to third on a single by sophomore Jason Tarewicz. Kelly then crossed the plate on a balk. St. Joe's returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware State Game time is 2:30 and all of the action can be heard on 1590-AM WPWA.
