PHILADELPHIA (10/13/01) - The Saint Joseph's men's rowing team took to the Schuylkill River on Saturday for the Navy Day Regatta. The Hawks sent five crews into the water against some tough competition, including the likes of Navy, Army, Penn and Temple.
The Hawks started the day with the men's lightweight 4 crew led by
Jason Bansch finishing 11th of 15 in the heavyweight 4 event ahead of strong crews from Loyola, Temple and La Salle. The Four rowed the 2.5 mile course in a time of 17:02. Two freshmen eight boats rowed among strong field that included perennial powers Penn, Navy and Temple, rowed well, posting times of 16:4 and 17:18 to place ninth and tenth in the 12-team race.
The lightweight 8 led by Terri Venglarik and
Charles Duncan lined up against four Penn boats, four Navy boats, as well as SJU's typical Dad Vail competition. The Hawks rowed very well but were over-stroked a bit by some of the field. SJU finished 11th, but not far off 9th place with a time of 15:59.
The varsity eight results were not available.
The Hawks compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta next Sunday (10/21).
