PHILADELPHIA (05/19/03) -- They say it takes a little bit of luck to be good. The 2003 version of the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team only had only bad luck this spring, as its limped to a 4-11 overall record and 0-7 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks lost four games by one goal, three more in overtime, and played all but the season opener without their playmaker, Shannon Hungate. The senior began the season second on the all-time SJU assist list, but suffered a fractured eye orbital during the team's spring break trip to Florida.
Without Hungate in the lineup, head coach Denise Szatkowski saw senior captain Kelly Butler and junior Kristen Teklinsky step up in her absence. Butler led the team with 31 goals and tied Teklinsky (26 goals, 10 assists) with 36 points. Senior Brett Dymarczyk also joined the 30-point club with 19 goals and 11 assists, while freshman Kerry O'Connell made an immediate impact in her rookie campaign, scoring 14 goals and dishing seven assists.
The big story on Hawk Hill was the play of the defense. Led by senior captain Kat Burke, who led the team with 41 groundballs and 28 caused turnovers, SJU set a new school record with an 8.21 GAA. Sophomore Courtney Huff continued her adjustment from the field hockey turf and led the Atlantic 10 with an 8.24 GAA. Her performance, which earned her team MVP honors, was the second best season in the cage by a Hawk in team history.
After starting the season 0-4, including three losses by a combined total of four goals, Saint Joseph's responded by taking two out of three games. A 13-7 win over Lafayette and a 13-3 victory over Wagner sent the Hawks into the meat of their A-10 schedule. Losses to Richmond and St. Bonaventure made an April 9 matchup with La Salle a must win to keep SJU's playoff hopes alive. St. Joe's jumped to a 8-0 first half lead, but the Explorers scored 11 consecutive goals, including three in overtime to keep the Hawks out of the postseason.
Junior defender Megan Gresh provided some excitement a week later, as she capped a late second half comeback with the game-winner with 40 seconds left for a 10-9 home win over American. SJU also hung tough with A-10 champion Temple (7-6 loss) and playoff participant Massachusetts (8-6 overtime loss), before ending the season with an 8-6 win over archrival Villanova.
Gresh and senior Lauren Foley were named to the Atlantic 10's academic all-conference team, while Huff was selected for the Upper Atlantic Region Tournament second team.
