2000-01 TEAM HONORED AS MVP AT ANNUAL BASKETBALL BANQUET

Philadelphia, PA (4/22/01) - The success of the 2000-01 St. Joseph's University men's basketball season was a team effort, so it is only fitting that the entire Hawk squad was named the recipient of the John P. Hilferty Memorial Award recognizing the Most Valuable Players of the 2000-01 team. Current assistant coach Mark Bass, SJU's all-time three-point leader, is the 2001 inductee into the St. Joseph's University Men's Basketball Hall of Fame. A fiery leader on the court, Bass led the Hawks to the NIT finals his senior season. That year, 1995-96, he averaged 14.3 points per game, second on the team, while connecting on a school-record 91 treys (268 attempts, also a record). A second team all-Philadelphia Big Five selection, the Trenton, N.J. native (McCorristin High/Maine Central Institute) connected on a record 225 three-pointers over his four-year career (1992-96). He also served as a team captain his junior and senior years at SJU. Sophomore Alexandre Sazonov, who became just the third Hawk to block more than 50 shots in a season (65 total), was named the team's Most Improved Player while seniors Lionel Ngounou and The Hawk, Sarah Brennan (William F. Maher Memorial Award for Loyalty) and Frank Wilkins (Pat O'Pake Unsung Hero Award) also garnered honors. Former Hawk player and current benefactor Bill Conway (1941-43) was named the recipient of the Michael J. Conway Memorial Award. The award is presented to a former player or coach who has given back in the spirit of Mike Conway, a former SJU equipment manager (1965-85). Other honorees at the banquet included senior Erick Woods (Daniel J. Cummings Memorial Award for Spirit); junior Bill Phillips (Rev. Emory Ross, S.J. Bellarmine Award for Academic Excellence); spirited Hawk fan Steve Klarich (Sixth Man Award); and Director of Broadcast Services as well as the "Voice of Hawk Basketball" Ken Krsolovic and Director of Athletic Development Katie Shields (William J. Bennett Mem. Award for Dedication and Service to SJU Basketball).
