HAWKS FALL TO LAFAYETTE IN SEASON OPENER, 11-6

EASTON, PA (3/16/02) - Host Lafayette College scored seven first half goals in spoiling Saint Joseph's season opener, 11-6. Sophomore Kristin Teklinsky and junior Kelly Butler led the way for SJU each scoring two goals. Junior Shannon Hungate and senior Maura McNamara also tallied goals for the Hawks. Lafayette jumped out to an early start, scoring the first goal just inside the three minute mark as senior Stephanie Tinney found the back of the net off an assist from Jennifer Stone. Hungate responded two minutes later to tie the game, 1-1. Lafayette's Heather McClelland gave the Leopards a 2-1 advantage, but Teklinsky fought back less than a minute later to tie the game at 2-2. Lafayette then outscored the Hawks 5-1 to close out the first half with a 7-3 lead. Leopard Jill Marvin opened the second half with a goal to push Lafayette's lead to five. Both McNamara and Teklinsky added a one-two punch, netting goals to cut the Leopards lead to three. Lafayette's solid passing abilities proved too much for the Hawks as the Leopards scored three more goals to make the score 11-5. In the final two seconds of the game, Butler sneaked in a final tally for the Hawks. Senior goalie Lauren Bradley protected the net, notching 12 saves for the Hawks. The Hawks, 0-1, will play host to Lehigh, on Tuesday March 19. The game is set for 5 pm.
