RHODE ISLAND DOWNS SAINT JOSEPH'S, 61-51

PHILADELPHIA (2/12/04) - For some reason, Rhode Island gives the SJU women's basketball team fits. Last year, URI essentially kept the Saint Joseph's out of the NCAA Tournament by upsetting the A-10 East champs in the conference quarterfinals. Tonight, the Rams put a serious crimp in the Hawks postseason plans with a 61-51 victory at the Fieldhouse. Senior Irina Krasnoshiok shot 10-for-14 from the floor for 22 points to lead SJU. After the first 20 minutes of play yielded a 26-26 halftime score, the visiting Rams began to pull away. Rhody (13-10, 6-6 A-10) opened the half with a 9-2 run over the first four minutes to open a 35-28 lead. Krasnoshiok, who tied a program record with 12 consecutive field goals dating back to Tuesday's win over Pennsylvania, sparked a 13-5 spurt with seven points of her own to give the Hawks their last lead of the game at 41-40 with 10:31 to play. Rhode Island extended its lead to a slim five over the next eight minutes, but SJU (14-8, 8-3) continued to answer back. The Crimson and Gray cut the lead to two on four separate occasions, the last time on a Krasnoshiok three at the 5:37 mark. Her jumper from the baseline with 1:22 on the clock cut the deficit to 52-49, but proved to be the final field goal for SJU. The Haws were forced to foul and URI made good on 7-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch for the win. Krasnoshiok was the only offensive threat for Saint Joseph's, scoring 22 of the team's 51 points. Without the 6-5 center's 10-for-14 performance from the field, SJU shot a paltry 10-for-41 (24%) and committed 21 turnovers. Seniors Erin Brady and Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan each scored eight points, while sophomore Maura McBryan pulled down a team high eight rebounds. Denise King led the Rams with 19 points, while Katie Stailing added 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. Saint Joseph's finally ends a brutal stretch in which it played four games in six days, compiling a 2-2 record. SJU has two days to prepare for a trip to Massachusetts on Sunday at 2 p.m.
