SJU DOMINATES HAWK BATTLE, BEATS MONMOUTH 7-0

PHILADELPHIA (04/02/03) - The Hawk men's tennis team won its seventh consecutive match in convincing fashion on Tuesday with a 7-0 thrashing of visiting Monmouth. Saint Joseph's dropped just eight games in sweeping the singles matches, and only two from the second to sixth spots in the lineup. SJU improves to 11-5 on the season, while the other Hawks drop to 2-2. Sophomore Francisco Velazquez was involved in the only semi-close call, as he took a 6-4, 6-2 win at first singles. He also picked up his 39th career win, moving him past current Hawk assistant coach Leonardo Barbosa for second place all-time. Freshman Jimmy Holland was dominating at second singles, winning a 6-0, 6-0 match. Freshman Chris Spencer dropped just two games in his straight set win (6-1, 6-1), while the fourth through six spots did not drop a single game in three straight-set wins. Sophomore Van Homer Pangilinan, freshman Antonio Aniello and freshman A.J. Garabedian were all 6-0, 6-0 victors. In doubles, the Hawks mixed things up a bit, moving Spencer and Aniello to first doubles, where they were 8-4 winners. Senior Enrico Capitan and junior Mike Goldschmidt saw their first action of the season and made the most of it, earning a decisive 8-1 win at third doubles. SJU hosts A-10 rival Temple on Saturday on Finnesey Courts.
