PHILADELPHIA (02/17/02) Marvin O'Connor and
Susan Moran have been named the recipients of the Class of 1950 Award given to the top male and female senior athletes at Saint Joseph's University. The Award was presented at the Undergraduate Award Ceremony on Saturday, May 18, which was held in conjunction with University's commencement exercises.
It marks the first time that two basketball players have received the award in the same year. The last men's basketball player to receive the prestigious Class of 1950 Award was Ray Washington in 1991. Maureen Costello, a 1998 graduate, was the last women's basketball player to be honored.
O'Connor, a three-time all-Big Five and two-time all-District honoree, scored 1,678 points and set a school record with 231 three pointers made during his brilliant three-year career at Saint Joseph's. As a junior, the 6-4 guard out of Philadelphia's Simon Gratz High broke the school record for points (706) and three-pointers (99) in a season, helping lead SJU to a school record 26 wins and a first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks advanced to the second round of the tournament as O'Connor led in scoring in both postseason games, tallying 21 in a win over Georgia Tech and matching his career high with 37 points in a heart-breaking loss to top-seed Stanford.
A preseason All-America selection as a senior, the talented Hawk averaged 17.5 points to lead SJU in scoring for the third straight year. Off the court, the sociology major was selected from a pool of over 1,700 candidates as the White-Williams Scholar for his achievements in the classroom. That Award is presented to the Philadelphia area college graduate who received the valedictory award in high school, and while in college gave back to his community through leadership and service.
Moran, arguably the greatest player in SJU women's basketball history, leaves Hawk Hill as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,340 points and fourth on the school's rebound list (908). The Hawk forward also became the first SJU player to lead her team in scoring and rebounding in four consecutive seasons. An honorable mention All-American as a senior, the Tullamore, Ireland native ranked fourth in the nation in scoring with a 23.3 scoring average. A two-time all-Atlantic 10 and three-time all-Big Five selection, she was named Player of the Year in both leagues this past year.
In the classroom she is second to none. Twice named Atlantic 10 Student Athlete of the Year, the marketing major earned Verizon Academic All-America status in both her junior and senior years. She has also been one of the athletic department's leaders in community service as well.
