The Saint Joseph's University men's rowing team had a busy weekend, competing at the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday and the Atlantic 10 Fall Regatta on Sunday. A successful two days, SJU brought home medals at each event.
The men's program had a great day at the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday, highlighted by a silver medal from the First Freshman 8 and a bronze by the Varsity Lightweight 8.
Bested only by Princeton, the First Freshman 8 rowed an inspired race and handily beat the likes of Penn, Navy, Georgetown and 42 other crews. Competing in the same field, the Second Freshman finished 16th, just 1.0 second behind Georgetown and ahead of most team's first freshman 8s.
The Varsity 8 finished a strong 6th of 22, just 13.0 seconds behind Temple, but more importantly 7.0 seconds ahead of Hobart -William Smith, which won the Head of the Charles last week in the college division. The Varsity Lightweights placed 3rd out of 10, just 8.0 seconds behind Dad Vail Silver Medalist Delaware.
The JV8 finished 9th with a time of 13:59 in its race.
The Freshmen Men's 8 and Varsity Men's 8 lead the day with first place finishes in their events at the A-10 Fall Regatta. The Varsity Men 8 finished the course with a time of 13:13. The Hawks beat second place U Mass by 9.0 seconds, followed by Fordham, SJU's 2nd Varsity 8, Temple and UMass B.
The Men's Freshmen 8 rowed a spectacular race leading 2nd place Temple by 25 seconds. The 2nd Freshmen 8 finished a strong third in the field of 8 boats, more than 30 seconds ahead of fourth place UMass.
Due to an illness in the team's third freshman 8, SJU boated a Freshman 4 in the Varsity 4 event. The Frosh 4 shocked the 10 boat field with a 2nd place finish, coming in just 5 seconds behind Temple's Varsity 4 and 22 second ahead of Duquesne in third place.
The men return to the water this weekend at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax, Va.
