PHILADELPHIA (3/19/04) - Senior
Erin Brady scored 16 points and classmate
Stephanie Graff added a double-double as Saint Joseph's used a 14-3 second half run to break away from Kent State in the first round of the WNIT on Friday night. Graff scored 13 points and grabbed 13 boards to help the Hawks advance to Sunday's second round match-up with Seton Hall at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
Showing some rust from a 11-day layoff, SJU fell behind by as many as nine points in the first half as a Heather Harris jumper gave the Golden Flashes (19-12) a 22-13 lead at the 7:35 mark. The Hawks (21-10) fought back with a 16-4 spurt that gave the hosts a 29-26 halftime advantage. Brady, who had limped off the court early in the half with what appeared to be a severe ankle sprain, returned to give SJU a lift late in the half. The halftime advantage again proved to be secure, with St. Joe's improving to 18-1 this season when going into the locker rooms with the lead.
After an Andrea Csaszar (12 points) layup brought Kent State within 31-30 at the 16:08 mark of the second half, SJU began to break away. Within 90 seconds, three-pointers by seniors Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan and
Amra Mehmedic and a jumper by classmate
Irina Krasnoshiok turned a one-point lead into a comfy nine-point advantage. The quick burst proved to be the back-breaker for the Golden Flash.
SJU extended the lead to 54-39 before Kent State implemented a hectic full-court press that enabled the visitors to draw within eight with 45 seconds to play. It was too little, too late for KSU and Saint Joseph's advanced to the second round of the WNIT for the third straight season. There it will face a Seton Hall (15-14) team that defeated George Mason, 66-58, in overtime on Thursday. Should St. Joe's defeat the Pirates, it will advance to the WNIT quarterfinals for the first time in team history.
Graff turned in her sixth double-double of the season and second straight, despite shooting 4-for-11 from the floor. Krasnoshiok added 11 points off the bench, while Melissa DeGrate paced Kent State with 17 points.
