PHILADELPHIA (04/23/03) - On paper, today's women's lacrosse game between Temple and Saint Joseph's shouldn't have been this close. But the Hawks shortened the game by playing a possession styled offense and all the emotion of senior day gave Saint Joseph's a lift against the Owls, who came into the game undefeated in the Atlantic 10 (5-0.) Unfortunately for SJU and its five seniors, the Hawks simply ran out of time and dropped its fifth game of the season by two goals or less. Temple improves to 10-5 overall with the 7-6 win, while SJU drops to 3-10, 0-5.
After Temple's Deanna Radcliffe (three goals) started the scoring just 45 seconds into the game, St. Joe's responded with goals by senior Brett Dymarczyk and junior Kristen Teklinsky to take a 2-1 lead at the 17:49 mark.
Another TU goal evened the score before Teklinsky struck again to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead, their last of the game. Temple controlled the end of the second half and scored goals at 10:12 and 9:41 to go into halftime with a 4-3 lead.
A freshman Kerry O'Connell goal three minutes into the half tied the score at four. The Owls responded with two more goals to take what seemed to be a safe 6-4 lead with nine minutes to go.
Teklinsky scored the goal of the year just a minute later as her first shot was blocked by Sheena Oomen (11 saves), but bounced high into the air. The Hawk attacker leaped, snatched the ball out of mid air and found the back of the net, all in one fluid motion. TU's Tiffany Pulaski added an insurance goal before O'Connell's final tally of the game brought SJU within one at 7-6.
Temple controlled the face-off and held possession for the remainder of the game. Both teams fired 20 shots for the game and SJU held a 26-17 advantage in groundballs.
Sophomore Courtney Huff made seven saves in the net. Teklinsky played a part in five of SJU's six goals, as she added a hat trick and two assists.
The game marked the final home game for seniors Kat Burke, Kelly Butler, Dymarczyk, Lauren Foley and Shannon Hungate.
The Hawks travel to Massachusetts on Sunday for their final A-10 matchup before returning to the Main Line on Tuesday to take on Villanova.
