PHILADELPHIA (4/23/04)- The Saint Joseph's Hawks fell to the University of Massachusetts by the score of 13-11 on Finnesey Field. Senior Kristen Teklinsky scored four goals, while sophomore Kerry O'Connell added two goals and three assists for the Hawks in a losing effort. The loss drops Saint Joseph's record to 6-4 and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10, while UMass improved its record to 4-9 and 2-3 in the conference.
The Hawks jumped out to and early lead after Teklinsky found the back of the net twice, and fellow seniors
Megan Gresh and
Amie Schmoltze each scored once to put the Hawks up 4-0 just seven minutes into the first half. UMass would score the next four goals to tie the game at 4-4, but two goals by
Shannon Scott broke that tie and put the Hakws back up by a score of 6-4. UMass fought back however and managed to tie the score once again, but St. Joe's responded with another goal by Scott and Kerry O'Connell's first tally of the game to again take a two goal advantage. Massachusetts scored late in the first half to cut the lead to 8-7, but Kristen Teklinsky's third goal of the half, gave the Hawks a 9-7 advantage at halftime.
Saint Joseph's struck first in the second period on Teklinsky's fourth goal to give the Hawks the 10-7 advantage. UMass responded with a goal, but Kerry O'Connell scored her second goal of the game to increase the Hawks lead back to three, at 11-8. However St. Joe's would not score again. Massachusetts scored five times over the final 20 minutes and won the game by the score of 13-11.
The Hawks returns to action on Sunday, April 25th when they head to Duquesne to take on the Dukes. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
