CAMDEN, NJ (5/31/03) - With three boats in action, the Saint Joseph's University men's rowing team closed out the year at the prestigious IRA Regatta on the Cooper River over the weekend. Dating back to 1895, the IRA Regatta is the oldest collegiate rowing championship in the country bringing more than 1,100 oarsmen from over 60 colleges and universities to compete. The V4+ finished the course in a time of 6:43.36, 3.0 seconds ahead of second place Purdue. That crew also bested San Diego State, Temple, Michigan and Grand Valley State in the petite final.
SJU's Freshman 8 and the Varsity 4 without a coxswain both advanced to the third finals. The Frosh 8 finished fourth (6:06.52) behind Boston University, Michigan and Navy, but ahead of Northeastern and Marist. The V4-, meanwhile placed sixth (7:14.48), trailing Columbia 'A', Rochester, Yale, Cornel 'B', and Lehigh.
