FAIRFAX, VA (4/06/03) - Competing under tough weather conditions and against a talented field that included the likes of George Washington, George Mason, Navy, Drexel, US Merchant Marine Academy, Villanova, Loyola, Bucknell, Duke, William & Mary, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Johns Hopkins, John Carroll, Susquehanna, and Rutgers-Camden., the Saint Joseph's men's rowing team garnered a pair of medals over the weekend at the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax, Va.
The freshman lightweights rowed in the heavyweight event and finished second in their heat behind Navy, but ahead of Bucknell, William & Mary and Duke. The freshman heavyweights easily won their heat beating George Mason, Penn State, CNU and Pitt. SJU was the only school with two boats that made it through to the final. The Hawk heavyweights finished 2nd behind Navy with George Washington third. The SJU lightweights placed fourth.
The Varsity Lightweights raced in the JV event because there was no lightweight event. SJU won the event finishing ahead of Drexel, Navy and George Washington.
The Varsity 8 won their qualifying heat easily, beating Navy, Duke, Bucknell, Susquehanna and Maryland. In the Final, the SJU Varsity 8 let their youth get the better of them and finished a disappointing fourth behind George Washington, Navy, and Drexel but ahead of George Mason and Villanova.
