PHILADELPHIA (04/15/03) -- Saint Joseph's concluded its best season since 1973 on Tuesday with a 4-3 win over UMBC (6-10). With the win, SJU finishes its season with a 14-6 record, the best since the 1973 team went 10-1. The 14 wins are the second most in program history behind the 1971 team that won 15 matches.
Freshman Jimmy Holland, with his 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles, won his 22nd match of the season, breaking teammate Francisco Velazquez's record of 21 set last season. Holland finishes his rookie campaign with a 22-14 record.
Sophomore Van Homer Pangilinan recovered from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles and freshman A.J. Garabedian was a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 victor at fifth singles.
SJU continued its doubles dominance of late, winning the point behind the effort of Holland and Garabedian, who were 8-4 winners at #1 doubles. Sophomore Francisco Velazquez and Pangilinan won 8-1 at #2 doubles.
The win over UMBC snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Retrievers and was the first Hawk win since 1989.
