PHILADELPHIA (2/29/04) - Reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week
Irina Krasnoshiok scored a game-high 19 points and fellow senior
Amra Mehmedic scored her 1,000th point as the Hawks celebrated "Senior Day" with a 54-42 victory over Fordham. Despite only receiving field goals from three players and none in the final six minutes, SJU held its opponent to under 50 points for the seventh time this season and wrapped up the regular season with an 18-9 overall and 12-4 A-10 record.
Mehmedic scored nine points, seven of which came from the foul line, to become the fourth Hawk this season and the second in the past week to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The 19th SJU player to reach a grand in the program's 31-year history, Mehmedic scored point number 1,000 on a free throw with 1:48 remaining in the half.
After falling behind 4-0 early, SJU went on a 16-4 run to open up an eight-point advantage. Fittingly, all 16 points came from Hawk seniors, with Krasnoshiok and senior
Erin Brady (13 points) combining for 11 of the points during the spurt. In fact, the Hawk Class of 2004 scored all 26 points in the half and headed to the lockerroom leading 26-15.
Fordham (11-16, 4-12) played well to start the second half, cutting SJU's lead to just five (28-23) at the 16:32 mark. Saint Joseph's stretched the lead to 10 six minutes later, but couldn't put away the Rams. The visitors would draw within five again, with 6:58 to play, but would not get any closer.
A Krasnoshiok three-pointer with 5:57 to play proved to be the final SJU field goal of the game. The hosts did connect on 9-of-11 from the charity stripe down the stretch to keep Fordham at bay. Senior
Stephanie Graff scored eight points, all from the foul line, and matched the Rams' Stacey Price for a game-high 10 points. Monica Mack paced Fordham with 15 points.
Neither team shot particularly well, with the Hawks coming in at 34.1% and Fordham at 28.1%, including just 1-for-13 from behind the arc. SJU has now won three straight games heading into next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships, held at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The 12 Atlantic 10 wins mark the thrird straight year that the Crimson and Gray have reached at least a dozen wins in the conference and the fifth time in the past six years.
St. Joe's honored its six seniors-Brady, Graff,
Esther Hoffer, Mehmedic, and Elizabeth "Hootie" Mohan in pregame ceremonies. The group combined for over 13,000 minutes, 4,300 points, 2,100 rebounds, and 900 assists during its tenure on Hawk Hill.
